While We're on the Subject...

....how about a few more pictures of our house? Here's another closer shot of the mantle:

Below, you can see some of the lovely wainscoting in the dining room ( ~and a family friend working on the wiring).

Did I ever mention the huge windowsills in the living and dining rooms? ~I love them!

Here is more wainscoting on the wall dividing the living and dining rooms.

And, just for good measure, I thought I'd post a picture of the old wooden door I wrote about in my last post. Perhaps someday I'll take a shot of the staircase it conceals............;)

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the carpets are now a thing of the past. Upstairs there are some good wooden floors that, with a little work, will look very nice. Downstairs the original wooden floors are really not worth saving.........except possibly the living room.........we'll just have to see.
The wiring is almost completed, and then the fellows move on to plumbing! Hurray!!!

In our old, old House.......

.....there's an upstairs room.
In the upstairs room, there's an old wooden door.
Behind the old wooden door, there's a dark narrow staircase
(~Which leads straight up to the attic........spooky, I know!).
By the dark narrow staircase, there's an old dusty wall.
In that old dusty wall, my husband found~
these:

We are not really sure what this is...

...an old picture frame, perhaps?
There was broken glass around it....

And old boots, beautifully made.

A child's and what we think was a lady's.
They are each a right-footed boot.

We think they must have been stored on the stair,
and that just the right boot of each pair got knocked off into the wall.

If they could only talk,
I wonder what stories they could tell........

On Walks........

"Take long walks in stormy weather.......

..........or through deep snow in the fields and woods, if you would keep your spirits up.

Deal with brute nature.

Be cold and hungry and weary."

Dull, Brown Day......

"Everything today has been
heavy and brown.

Bring me a Unicorn
to ride about the town."

~Anne Morrow Lindbergh

*Edited to add that since my last post, a dramatic change has occurred, and now it is quite wild and white outside! Miss Posy and I have decided that an afternoon tea will be just the thing.....paired up with the remainder of the lightning cake, of course!;)

Berries and Cream.....

Served them two ways this morning: over oatmeal, and over leftover Lightning Cake (-another recipe found in Joy of Cooking) Mmmmmm!

On Salad.....

"According to the Spanish proverb, four persons are wanted to make a good salad:

a spendthrift for oil, a miser for vinegar, a counsellor for salt, and a madman to stir it all up."

A Good End.....

..........to four rather bad bananas. Just goes to show, in a very simplistic way of course, that bad can indeed be turned to good. So, a message to any bad bananas that may ever find themselves reading this:

Don't lose hope. There may be banana bread in your future. Perhaps even very tasty banana bread, as in this particular case. I speak from first hand experience.....

Worn~Out Boots

This is what invariably happens around lunchtime. A whole morning spent busy at play is exhausting business........;)

This and That..

Last night my dear husband took me over to the house to see the wall he and dad put up in Miss Posy's room, and the progress he has made with the wiring. It truly is amazing what he gets done in the limited amount time he is able to spend over there. I am so proud of him. And the house, even in it's state of current chaos, really does feel like home. It is so easy to picture us living there..........I really have to try hard to keep from daydreaming about what it will be like when it is finished.........when we are all moved in..........my plans for arranging the furniture........where to put a vegetable and flower gardens.....a tire swing.........the lovely old barn, and where to put the chickens,(~ when we get them;)......I could go on, but I'll spare you. Yes, it is so easy for me to get lost in dreaming and not attend to the now........
(....like the dishes I should be doing upstairs, and the shelves I should be dusting.....)
Hoping you are all staying warm and cozy, wherever you are;) Tonight it is supposed to get down to -7 (!!!!!!!!!!!!) I'm thinking hot tea, a good book, and a roaring fire, will be just the thing!

Planning

Sat down with Blue, my knitting, and 500 Kitchen Ideas this afternoon. The plan is to get what we want "nailed down", so to speak, on Friday. That way my dear husband and Dad can start the wiring. Exciting........and a teeny bit stressful to think about.......but mostly exciting;)

Before Bedtime Reading....

"The sun was shining almost overhead. All the snow was a dazzle of sparkles, and the wood-haulers were coming down Hardscrabble Hill. High on the bobsleds piled with logs, the men cracked their whips and shouted to their horses, and the horses shook jingles from their string of bells."

About Angels....

"Make friends with the angels, who though invisible are always with you. Often invoke them, constantly praise them, and make good use of their help and assistance in all your temporal and spiritual affairs."
